Enforcement personnel is going to the AvvakumovkaToday there has been started the third counter-poacher expedition to the Olginskiy rion
To guard the spawning places of the Avvakumovka river there has gone this morning the interagency enforcement operative group. Representatives of several Federal agencies, the Administration of the Primorye territory and the Association of the Primorye fishery industry companies, the personnel of the Primorye Department of Interiors for more than a month will protect the approaches to the Keta spawning places. This is a third counter-poacher expedition to the Olginskiy rion. First time the interagency enforcement operative group had gone to the Avvakumovka river area in 2004. The initiator to establish the interagency enforcement operative group there used to be the Association of the Primorye fishery industry companies. The mass run of the Keta salmon to spawn in the river was attracting the crowds of poachers, who practically have led the population of the Primorye Keta to the brink of extinction. Annually they were catching out of the Avvakumovka river and its influxes up to 300 tons of fish. In the result of the first expedition of the operative group in autumn 2004, there have been confiscated more than two tons of fish and some twenty kilograms of Salmon caviar. For the first time within many years, the Keta, in the amount of some 22 thousand species, could spawn. However that year the operative personnel has met a problem - where to hand the confiscated, as there hasn't existed the industrial catching at the Avvakumovka river. The enforcement personnel had to bury the fish and the caviar confiscated. But just the next year a small quota, only 7 tons of Keta, had been allocated to the Moryak-Rybolov" fishing kolkhoz. The interagency enforcement operative group had blocked again all the approaches to the river. The autumn of 2005 there have been registered 520 violations, more than 400 poachers' gears and two tons of fish confiscated. 73 criminal cases have been initiated against the illegal fishermen. Literally in two years the process of the Primorye Keta population extinction has been stopped. The Association of the Primorye fishery industry companies isn't only the initiator in establishing interagency enforcement operative groups, but the APFIC vice-president, Alexander Platonov is taking active part in it. The APFIC is also rendering the organizational and financial support for the allocation, provision, fuel supply and communication. According to the APFIC President, Dmitriy Glotov, notwithstanding that in previous years the interagency enforcement operative group managed to restore the population of the Keta salmon and to block the approaches of poachers to the river, - it's too early to stop. There must be put more efforts and resources into the struggle against the poachers. We regard this input as an investment into the future of the fishery industry, in raising its effectiveness and competitiveness".
